I think I found a way to control illegal immigration without a giant wall.
Taxes.
We should let immigrants in and get them registered and then tax them. Well only until they become legal citizens. I think this idea will appeal to both sides and it'll give immigrants an added bonus. They don't have to worry about being deported so they can report abuse and mistreatment from employers.
You are hitting upon a key point here, Kevin.
Illegal aliens often don't pay taxes. Sure, the ones that want to apply for credit cards or gain bank loans, car or home financing will pay what they owe in income tax... but so many are paid in cash.
For instance, California and other southern states use a lot of illegal aliens for the manual labour intensive jobs. When they pay cash, they have to claim that as an expense somehow. Stricter laws for auditing accounting in farming operations might curb some of that. What they need to do is come up with a solution for the crimes committed by illegal immigrants. Often times they just send them back instead of prosecuting because it costs too much money to run them through the justice system.
I'm beginning to think for the harsher crimes that we ship them off to some large, remote island with wildlife and fishing. Heck, they could even make it a reality series if they really wanted to make it interesting for everyone. Couldn't be any worse than may of those "reality" shows out there today.
Well after all the hype over Bush's plan for immigration I think I can safely say mine is far better. I mean really who's gonna pay thousands of dollars just to stay in the country a few years repeatedly?
