Yea, I decided to post this under music rather than movies.

Led Zepplin (one of my favorite bands for those that dont know) incoperated many Tolkien (one of my favorite authors) references into their songs, so I decided to find as many Tolkien references in Zepplin songs and this is what I came up with;

LZ: Led Zepplin
JRR: J.R.R. Tolkien

1) Stairway to Heavn: possibly the most famous Zepplin song, it has a few allusions.

A) LZ: "All that glitters is gold"
B) JRR: "all that is gold does not glitter...."

I)LZ: "When I look to the west, and my spirt is crying for leaving.
II) JRR: In the Lord of the Rings, Tolkien states that elves, a race that is immortal, lest they be killed in combator some such way, must go westwards to the un-dying lands. When Legolas sees the gulls in the Bay of Balfals, he gets a longing to be on the sea, going westwards to the un-dying lands.

2) Ramble on, this has the mot apparent and hidden allusions to the Lord of the Rings.

A) LZ: "Leaves are falling all around, it is time I was on my way. Thanks to you I'm much obliged for such a pleasent stay.
B) JRR: Frodo, the bearer of the One Ring leaves Rivendale and its house of healing to start onwards on his Journey. He leaves in the autumn time to full-fill his quest.

I): LZ: "Ah, sometimes I grow so tired, But I know I one thing I have to do"
II): JRR: As Frodo the Ringbearer continues his quest towards the land of Mordor, where he must destroy the Ring, the weight and pull of corruption of the Ring tires him and saps his will. However he contiues onwards to full-fill his quest.

a)LZ: "T'was in the darkest depths of Mordor, I met a girl so fair, but Gollum and the evil one crept up and slipped away with her."
b)(This is the most obvious and well know link to tolkien) JRR: When Frodo and Sam are in Mordor, Gollum is constatly trying to get the ring (refered to as "her" in the song) untill he does get it, shortly before his death.

3) Misty Mountian Hop is a less well know song of Zepplins, but does contian some suggestions of Zepplin-Tolken links.

A) LZ: the song title: Misty Mountian Hop
B) JRR: The misty mountians in a range of mountians that Bilbo and Frodo each have to cross.

I) LZ "I"ve decided what I'm gonna do now, So I'm packing my bags for the Misty Mountians."
II) JRR: This is refering to the descion that Frodo makes, concerning the Ring and traveling to the land of Mordor to destroy it, a trip which takes him over the Misty Mountians.

4) Over the Hills and Far away is another not so well know Zepplin song. It has a few referances, some of them a little bit of a stretch.....

A) LZ: the song title; Over the hills and Far away.
B) JRR: The title refers to the journey that Bilbo takes over the Misty Mountians to Ereabor, far way from his home.

I)LZ: "I live for my dream, and a pocketful of gold."
II) JRR: possibly an alusion to the Ring (it is kept in Bilbo's pocket) and how it save his life.

a) LZ: "Many is a word, That only leaves you guessing, guessing 'bout a thing, you really oughta know."
b) JRR: Possibly a referance to the password that Gandalf must use to open the gate of Moria, the password being "friend" a simple word, but an interesting puzzle. "Speak Friend and Enter"

5) The Battle of Evermore is the Zepplin songs with the most links to Tolkien, indeed, it seems based abot hte Battle of Pelonr feilds, the huge battle in frount of the City of Minis Trith.

A) LZ: "Queen of light took her bow, And then she turned to go."
B)JRR: The queen of light refers to Eyown as she leaves Aragorn to join the Riders of Rohan.

I) LZ: "The prince of peace embraced the gloom."
II) JRR: Aragorn embracing his destiny to tread the paths of the dead.

a) LZ: "The dark lord rides in the force tonight"
b) JRR: the king of the ringwraiths leaded the attack on Minias Tirith.

i) LZ: "I hear the horses' thunder, Down in the valley below, I'm waiting for the angels of Avalon, Waiting for the eastern glow."-------" Tired eyes on the sunrise, Waiting for the eastern glow."
ii) JRR: Minas Tirth was attacked from Mordor, which lies in the east and was glowing again with life and energy as Suaron the Dark Lord sent foruth his armies to war.

c) LZ: "The ringwraiths ride in black"
d) JRR: Ringwraith is the evil men that where corrupted by the nine rings of power, given to them by Suaron. Now they serve the dark lord.

iii) LZ: "The magic runes are writ in gold, To bring the balance back."
vi) JRR: The ring of power, to be destroyed by Frodo, was cover in dark runes. With the destrution of the ring, the dark lord was destroyed, and the forces of good now had a chance to survive.

Oh yes! I remember reading this when you posted this before Delta. And I will say what I said before........sterling work!

I was having a talk about this with my friend Kas, who is a self-proffessed music journo, about how the LoTR influences com through so strongly in LZ. She'd never seen it before, was enlightened, and has since been looking for other book/music themes.

Yea, I find them interesting. Tell her to report on some of her findings her somtime, I'd like to see them.

Plant was know for inserting LOTR tid bits into his lyrics. Great examples, there, indeed.
The more one listens to Zeppelin, the more one notices them. Being a fan of both, i love it.

Very, very cool list to compile, Delta... I even know most of them!

Yeah, alot of them are pretty well known to fans of both, a couple are interesting ones that I didn't know about before I started to put this together.
