Title: Travel
Description: Where would you go?

psycholopher - February 28, 2005 05:57 PM (GMT)
Let's say you had unlimited resources, and you could just put your life on "pause". What countries would you go visit and why? How long would you be there? What would you do there? I could probably go on and on, but here are 10 that I've chosen. The order is probably roughly what I'd like to see.

I guess for me, I'd have twp main motivations in travelling: 1. to see a variety of different experiences, 2. to learn languages

1. I think I'd start in China, perhaps living in Beijing for a year to work on Chinese language, and then live 6 months in a Buddhist monastery.
2. Then it would be off to The Philippines, maybe on my great-aunt's fish farm for 6-8 months.
3. I think then I'd have to go somewhere in central/south America--perhaps El Salvador to do some service work and work on Spanish (maybe 6 months here too).
4. For psychoanalysis (treatment and training), it would be off to France for several years, because 1. psychoanalysis takes years and 2. it takes even longer when you have to learn French first. While I was there, I'd also read a ton of philosophy.
5. Since I've never been to Africa, I'd want to spend some time there too. Maybe 3 months in bigger, developing cities and another 3 months in the rainforest. I'm unfortunately rather ignorant about Africa, so I don't know what country would be good for this. Congo maybe? Maybe another 6 months working with the Red Cross or something like that here.
7. I'd like to go to Japan for maybe two years, where I'd like to learn Japanese and practice Zen archery.
8. Over to Australia, mostly to pick up another continent, but also to explore. I'd also probably go scuba diving here, a lot of outdoors type stuff (hiking, rock climbing, sky-diving). No more than 2-3 months here.
9. Then to Russia, mostly to tour around and see what it was all about. I'd spend maybe a month or two here, unless I really liked it, in which case I'd stay longer.
10. Finally, I'd spend 4 or so years in Italy. I'd spend a 1-2 years in Rome, learning Italian, seeing all the sites, and just living like a city-dwelling European. Then I'd move out to the Tuscany region, and own a wine vineyard.

Then, I'd go back to the states, unpause my life, and teach philosophy at a University for the rest of my life. *Sigh*

1. Germany. It'd be nice to see where my ancestors came from and I hear they make awesome chocolate.
2. Japan. I've always admired Japan. They don't complain or make excuses for their problems and goddamn I love a people with a sense of honor. It'd would also be kinda nice to get some weapons training there too.
3. Egypt. No particular reason.
4. Italy. I want to go to the Vatican.

1- Mexico. Yea, I've been there before, but I loved it. I'd live there for a few months, then start a southwards trek, hitting as many central american nations as I could.
2- Peru. I'd like my trek to end here, see some of the Incan ruins and the like.
3- Tibet. Pretty interesting.
4- Italy. See the basis of the roman empire. I know a few people who've been there and have nothing but good things to say about it.
5- Arabia. The middle eastern area, just to see it.
6- German and Swiss Alps do some treking there. I'd also like to see the tour de france as long as I was in the area.

Yeah Italy is great. Only a few complaints: pick-pockets, Italian men who harass your female friends, and Italian women who don't give you the time of day.

There's a lot of places I'd love to visit...

Egypt: I've always wanted to see the pyramids and one of the oldest civilizations, I figure 3 months and then I'd be ready to go
Morocco: My dad's favorite movie is Casablanca... and I've been intrigued with Marrakesh since highschool (due to the influence of the Beatles and Loreena McKennit) again not a whole lot of time, three months would do it.
China: It's one of the worldest oldest continuous civilizations, and I'm a history buff. It would also be neat to learn some chinese and psycholopher has more or less convinced me I need to go there at some point. I too think it would be neat to spend a couple months at a buddhist monastary and just... be :) Probably a year to see the sites, travel the silk road, a few months at the buddhist monastary, though if i really want to learn chinese I should take 5 years just to do that.
Greece: I've already been but only to Athens, I'd like to go back to Athens and actually see the National Archaelogical museum (it was closed during my stay there, they didn't have air conditioning installed and so decided to put it in prior to the Olympics) I'd want to go see Delphi, Salamis and a couple other places I've read about in my Classics courses I'd probably want to spend about a year total here.
India: I have two adopted cousins from India, I'd be intrigued to spend time travelling around some of the Indian country side I figure 6 months.
Vietnam: from what I hear it's a beautiful country, a friend of mine went for a summer trip and spent about a month and a half there and had great stories about it. Probably a year wandering around here visiting different monastaries and things
Thailand same as above
Belgium: I spent about a year there, it would be neat to go bum around there again with some of my friends whom I haven't seen in a while, have a few good beers with them, bring some home, not to mention the chocolate. Since I saw a lot of it already I'm hesitant to spend a lot of time, but it would be neat to live here again for a year or two and really immerse myself in the culture and catch one or two of the festivals that I missed but meant to catch.
Italy: Beautiful country, lots of ancient roman ruins to poke around in some more, a few friends here I'd like to visit, and I'd like to pick up some good wine while I'm at it. Spend probably a few years here then go on.
Germany: I never got to some parts of Germany I meant to my junior year, but I should probably spend some time and get fluent in German. If I ever decide to pursue a degree in Classics I'll need German.
Australia: I've got family here, so it would be nice to visit them, particularly since one of my cousins (distant cousin) has been over a few times taht would net me another continent. This would just be a visit and to see some sites, do a little hiking in the outback as well. Probably less than 6 months, but I tend to travel by the seat of my pants anyway...
Peru: Do some service work, probably teaching English, and see some Incan ruins and just spend 3-5 years imersing myself in the local culture before moving on
Japan: I've been fascinated with Japanese culture for a while, a friend of mine is goign to be there next year teaching English... it would be nifity to go see him, but since the goal would be gain an understanding of the native culture I'd need at least 6 months... probably a year to two to do it right but even then I'd probably just be skimming the surface before moving onto
Ireland: again visit family, that way word gets back to my family in the States that I'm alive, spend just a couple months here and relax. Then I'd go to...
Russia: I've always been fascinated by Russian culture. I'd like to go see at least Moscow.
The off to
France I'd live in San Malo and learn French, another requisite for Classics advanced study should I decide I want a Phd. I'd travel a lot though, I'd like to get to Taize since I agree with their ecumenical appraoch to Christianity and finally go to:
Israel: I'd make a pilgramigage, bring some holy stuff back for my grandparents and then head home.

Sri Lanka: I'd like to go to Colombo, perhaps (if it still exists) even visit my late grandma's Montessori school. Go to the rubber plantation where my late grandpa worked at, visit my dad's boarding school.
Cuba (after Castro is gone): I've always wanted to visit Camaguey and the farm where my mom grew up (until she had to leave when she was four). I'd also like to go to Havana.
Democratic Republic of Congo: After reading up a bit on this country with a very turbulent past, I'd really like to travel to Kinshasa. The city isn't a pretty place, but it certainly would be a learning experience on how people are able to get by with seemingly nothing at their disposal. Also I'd like to see the "sapeur" fashion, listen to Congolese rumbas, and find out what ordinary Congolese think of Lumumba, Mobutu, etc.
Rwanda: To try and understand how genocide occured.
Uganda: Work as a human rights activist, urge Pres. Museveni and his government to truly work hard towards ending the war with the Lord's Resistance Army in the north and urge him to investigate the murders of innocent Acholi civilians by the army.

4) Brazil
5) USA
6) Canada
7) China

9) Cuba
10) Israel
