Title: Sacraments
Description: They make you holy. Or do they?????

I want to open a discussion about Christian sacraments. We can narrow the discussion as it goes on, but I just want to bring up the topic. Thoughts? Questions? Comments?

Here's a Wikipedia Article to get us started.

Can women get all seven? Can't they only get six? Or am I thinking of somthing else.....

Wait, and confermation comes right after Baptism? Is that the way it still happens?

Stupid CCD didn't teach me shit...

Anyways, I rather like what the Quakers hold to, about "all acts should be considered Holy." I was unaware of that concept, but if you are going to believe in things being Holy, might as well as extend it to all acts.

Edited to make Boru feel better about himself.

I hope it feels so good to be right. There's nothing more exhilarating than pointing out the shortcomings of others, is there?

:P ;)

You're right CDD didn't teach you anything, I would hope CCD did though (sorry couldn't resist that jab I promise to never ever lampoon you for your spelling again.)

Psych started a discussion on CHRISTIAN sacraments not Catholic ones, ergo in most other denominations women can get all 7.

Regarding confirmation if your denomination has it then yes it comes after baptism.

So do Roman Catholics do it right after birth? Confirmation that is.

Boru - March 25, 2006 06:23 AM (GMT)
Nope.

In Catholicism, Baptism is administered shortly after birth. Then the parents and God parents speak on behalf of the child.

Later on when they can speak for themselves (ages vary from diocese to diocese) the child is confirmed in the faith. For example I got confirmed when I was 15.

Okay, thats what I thought.

For myself, I decided that any god that I would believe in would not require rituals. I find churches use sacraments as reminders to their members of the churches teachings. I find them to be tools of the church and not necessarily demonstrations of holiness per se. I'm not saying they're bad. I just don't find sacraments to be particularly holy as they can be done by rote without any real faith by the person undertaking or performing these rituals.

Well Catholic sacraments can be part of this discussion as well. I just wanted to focus on Christianity as opposed to other sacrament-style rituals in other religions.

True, however, I believe Delta asked his question about whether women could receive all 7 because in the Catholic tradition women can not receive holy orders. Hence my reply that you started this question with regard to Christian sacraments, ergo there are denominations that allow women to be ordained and therefore women can receive all seven sacraments.
